Papertrails started in 1927. It may say in wills that the deceased leaves such-and-such to their adopted son X, but mostly there's no easy way to trace them.

I believe that up to 1887 adoptions were not "formal" i.e. grandparents would have taken on the burden of grandchildren and brought them up as their own, perhaps not bothering to formally "adopt" at all. Makes life difficult for us researchers. If you look back through the tips board for last week I think you will find a similar question, with probably a more satisfactory answer. Jacqui
