Divorce - 1890's style

Anyone know anything about divorce proceedings (if they existed) in the late 1890's early 1900's?? I have a grt-grandmother living apart from her youngish children and husband and my grandmother and her one brother staying with aunt and uncle miles from mum or dad - I can only deduce they separated (or perhaps divorced) just before 1901 census. I cannot recall any mention of this word "divorce" being mentioned in the family, but then of course neither was "sex" "underwear" or millions of other subjects. Any ideas where I might look?
