Thanks everyone - the best way to do it online is throu the war graves site - provided you know enough to ID the person it will even id the full unit the person served in - date of death - location of grave - directions for getting there and what other units have soldiers buried there - very useful site and helpful too Regards.

There are separate registers at the FRC for Army/Navy/Marines etc deaths. There is one register for 1914-1921 split into each service. Quite sobering that there are about 20 volumes for Army alone. I would imagine that these should be searchable on 1837, but would think it unlikely that they have been 'done' on Free BMD yet. Hope this helps. Maz. XX

Hi, Have you tried the Commonwealth War Graves commission website? You can type in a name and if they died during either of the WW's it will give you info on where buried and mission although amount of info does vary per person. http://www.cwgc.org.uk Zoë's are obviously helpful people!!

Diane As far as i know (and I've only had one to trace so far) the deaths are registered by the closest living relatice i.e. the one who would have got the telegram informing of the death. It's worth looking maybe one or two quarters after the date of death in case the actual registration was delayed in any way (my death occurred in August but was registered in the December quarter). Can anyone help - if a man died during WW1 and was buried in Belgium / France - in which district would his death be registered when looking for the certificate ?. Thanks
