Hello everyone, Thanks for your replies - confirmed what I'd suspected unfortunately! John's comment about the first child dying is very interested - not something that I'd considered before! As most of my ancestors were paupers that could explain a lot! Jane

All the above is correct re BMD's. The other problem as well is that as some families were too poor to pay if the first child died they would name the second one with the same name and thus save money. Hence 1 of the reasons why dates can be out.

Jane I have many unregistered births and marriages because it wasn't mandatory until 1875. There was a charge so why would poor people pay if they didn't have to. It's very frustrating and that's why parish baptism and marriage registers are so important but unfortunately, not so easy to get access to. Sue

Jane,as far as I know BMD were required to be registered from 1837 and people did get find as you have said,I think that it is a case of looking at church registeres before then but I could be wrong.I am sure some one will give you more information

Does anyone know what the official line was on registering BM & Ds? I thought they all had to be registered after 1837, but I've recently found out that people were fined only from about 1875 onwards. Can anyone confirm this? It's just that I have a couple of brickwalls where I can't find certs for and I'm wondering if they just didn't register, espeically as they were in rural Dorset - very frustrating! Thanks a lot.
