Hi all, thanks very much for all your helpful suggestions. It actually got to the stage of not going even to the log-in screen - I just get a black screen with a message saying that windows can't open as there is something missing or corrupt. Have had to take the tower to hubbys friend who does this for a living and I am still waiting to find out the verdict! As I say, as long as he can save my Family Tree Maker file I will be happy.(ish) Although getting serious withdrawals from web and this site!! Thanks again for all your messages. Best wishes to all. Hi Maz. Sorry to hear you are having problems. I had this a few months back, did a virus scan and nothing was found but I downloaded the patch you can get anyway. I luckily didn't lose any of my files but my computer just kept shutting down on my. I haven't had any recent problems so I hope it wasn't anything to do with our recent commmunications that caused your problems. All my virus things are up to date and I also have a firewall installed. Hope you get things sorted. Mel

Around the time I got an e-mail from another GC member yesterday morning, all my archived Outlook Express folders and messages disappeared. I have Norton Internet Security installed and regularly updated. I immediately checked for updates, there were none. I ran a scan on the computer and no viruses were found. So it looks like an internal glitch, but I'm not entirely convinced!

Hi Colin, just sneaked on at work! My hubby is away so can't sort it. Am waiting for his friend to contact me to help. Its just a worry about all the data - I very stupidly never put it on disc. Hope I don't pay the price. Thanks for your concern though. And be warned - we had all the protection, but it didn't stop this 'thing'. Will be checking back in from work on thurs, happy hunting y'all. Maz. XX :(

NOT funny actually! Just a note to warn anyone who has been in contact with me that it would seem I have a lovely 'worm' in my computer eating all my stuff. I must apologise if I have passed it on - and say that I don't know where it came from as I didn't know I had it until the computer shut itself down. It seems that it has gone through my firewall and eaten that, then proceded to start munching bits of Windows. My main concern at this stage is for all my FamilyTree Maker files, if they can be saved I will happily remortgage to buy another computer! I just don't know if I could face re-inputting. SO ... please please make sure you back up your files to disc, then you won't have to lose sleep like me. Will be on and off here in my lunches from work, but will miss my daily 'fix' of GC until I am up and running again. Fed up! Maz. XX :((((
