Whats 1837 online all about?

Hi Paula, don't be too off put with 1837online. I also was a bit overwhelmed with it at first, but after getting the hang of it and with a bit of guesstimating I have found it an invaluable site. I would suggest though that each time you find the page of the surnames you are looking for, PRINT IT, even if it doesn't have the first name you are looking for, you may find later that it has the name of another relative! That has certainly been the case for me. Good Luck, Bev x

Definately try FreeBMD first to get the Quarter in which the event was registered. If FreeBMD is accurate, you can save yourself a fortune. If it's wrong, then you're back to square one but you haven't lost anything.

Here in Australia we can view the same at our local Family History Centre at the Latter Day Saints Church. I have only used 1837 a couple of times and it cost me an arm and a leg to find nothing! Majorly miffed I can tell you as the exchange rate was disgusting at the time! FREEBMD also has quite a few and is always updating. Sonja

Hi, For those who don't realise, these same indexes are available on microfiche at County Record Offices & at many main libraries & you can view them free of charge. You might need to book a session on a fiche reader but in my experience most of these places have plenty available & you can just drop in on the offchance. Will certainly save you a few quid! Tony

I don't want to put any new people off the 1837 but Kathryn is right! on quite a few years & Qtrs the name Walton (which I am researching) has been bulked into over 450 pages. It was like trying to find a needle in a haystack!! cost a bit, I can tell you

It's a good site, but £5 doesn't go far. You can only search by the first 3 letters of the surname. If you're looking for Smith you may have to remortgage the house to track the whole lineage down!

Hello all! I've seen messages on the tips board talking about 1837 online, I have never been on this site so I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me a bit about it before I try it. Is it a good site? Can I get info from other dates and not just 1837? Sorry if I'm sounding a bit thick! Paula
