This is also part of the reason the tax year starts 6th April! It was the old start of the year as adjusted for the change in calendar from Julian to Gregorian (or is it vice versa!) I also suupose that this is where the usual quarter dates for leases come from.

A friend gave me this info and I thought I would pass it on. Up until 1752 the year went from the 25th March to 24th March, so if you are looking for someone born in 1750 they could, in fact, have been born 1751, then in 1753 the year started 1st January. Also up to 1752 we had gained 11 days more than Europe, so to bring us in line, it was decided that in September that year they would take the 11 days out, we had 2nd September then the follwing day became 14th September. May be of interest to someone who has got back that far. Kim
