Thank you Robert for the further thought. I've found him on the 1891 census living in Barnsley, born in Clayton. Could still be any of the Claytons in Yorkshire, although the South Yorkshire Clayton might be the most obvious.He was born 1822. Anne

Just another thought you dont say when he was born( pre 1837 or not) have you tried looking at different censuses? They may contain different descriptions of his birthplace. It may be that in the first one,as a child, he was still living there. If pre 1837 then the parish registers might help.

This might be another name for "clayton heights" just outside clayton near Bradford

Hi, have you tried the web site www(.)old-maps(.)co(.)uk ( without the brackets )They have areas and addresses you can check on

A site I often use for finding old place names is www(.)abcounties(.)co(.)uk take out the brackets of course! When you get on the site go to Gazetteer of Place Names. It lets you use wild cards * and throws up a few possibilities.

Could it be known just as Clayton these days? There's a Clayton in West Yorkshire and also one in South Yorkshire. Jeanette

On the 1881 census I have an ancestor born in Clayton on the Hill, York. Does anyone know where this is please? Can't find it on a current map.
