Rowena, The GRO will attempt to trace your birth certificate providing you have approximate place/date of birth and name details. For a fee of 4.50 they will do a 3 year search. I used this service for one of my Great grandparents, although if you do have a reference for the certificate its cheaper!!! good luck! Sarah

Hi Rowena. Look at Christines reply, she will look up on 1837online and that will give you the reference.

Hi Katherine, How do I find the reference number? Do I have to travel to London or where he was born? Rowena

I don't think so. You must trace it yourself, which shouldn't be difficult if you have the name and year of birth. The GRO may be able to find it if you give them those details, but it will cost you more than if you find the reference for the birth certificate.

He died in 1896 aged 40. If I contact the General Register Office can they trace his birth certificate?
