Ancestors in prison!

I have an ancestor who would appear to have been in prison when the 1881 census took place. Is there anyway of finding out what he had actually done to be put there?

There are several sites around one lists convicts and black sheep it depends on the area they came from.

Hello Virginia maybe this might help you www(.)lightage(.)demon(.)co(.)uk 20,000 entries on the Black Sheep index 1860-1900. Index of villains and and some nice people too up to 90,00 entries. Shirley
