I was searching on the 1901 census, but I just can't find the person I'm looking for. Gertrude Amy O'Toole would be around 5, yet she doesn't seem to be registered. I browsed through all 210-odd O'Toole's and none of them look like a candidate. Her father's name was Bert, and as a long shot I was prepared to look at any Albert/Bertram/Bert variations, but there aren't any of those either. They've disappeared!

I don't know what variations there are of O'Toole, but my grandad and family are on 1901 under Warboys, took ages to suss that out.

It is annoying. I don't know what variations of O'Toole there are, unless the transcriber found the entry illegible.

I'm still looking for a whole family on the 1901,despite leaving out the surnames, trying loads of variations from the plausible to the bizaar, and yesterday a kind lady from Gc had a look. It's ridiculous,i'm missing at least 8 people!

I tried to find a relative on the 1901 census I was told that my grndfthr had brother called Bert I tried every combination, it turned out that his name was Harry Ethelbert, and he is there under Harry. Did your relative have another name.

This is a long shot - however, using 1901 census decoder I found a Gertrude Toole - age 6, born in Birmingham and a John Toole - age 34, born in Litchfield. The ID# were grouped for same household. Perhaps the transcriber mistook the "O" for an initial rather than part of surname? Penny

Hiya I've got a whole family of O'Days - listed under 'Day' all with the middle initial 'O' - if it helps. Same thing in the 1801 census. Good luck A

I'm having the same problem with my g-grandad Charles Shepherd. He's not on the 1881 but it's possible he wasn't born till after the census was taken. Can't find him on the 1891, though he should be about 9/10 years old and he's not on the 1901 either!! I know he existed because he got married in 1902 in Sheffield! Where DO they go? Tracey, Bolton

My advice is just keep trying!! Took me a year to find a family on my own set of 1881 disks as Sear had been transcribed as Lear!! Try searching with wildcards, first names of each family members with no surname, by profession and surname, profession and first name, address and anything else you can think of! Good hunting. Tracey Have you tried under 'Sheppard' and 'Shepperd'? Janet

Tracey

Tracey Report 8 Sep 2003 13:27

Hi Janet, I've tried every varient of 'Shepherd' i can think of. One 'p', two 'p's, herd, hard, heard (lol!!). He doesn't seem to be anywhere. He married a lady called Violetta Hukin at Christ Church, Attercliffe in 1902 and from this MC i know that his father was Thomas Shepherd (fireman, probably in the iron works).Charles was 21 at time of marriage and a steel melter. If anyone can help me further it would be really appreciated! Tracey, Bolton

Penny and Elaine I think you have her! Gertrude was born in Aston in the May of 1895. I would never have though to look under Toole. Thanks.

I found one of my families under finley instead of Sunley. Another under Ocafield when it should have been Oldfield. But I still cant find Ellen O'hanlon,c40yrs and daughter Catherine(Kate)c12yrs. Ellen was born Ireland and her daughter in South Bank. I've located the rest of the family in Middlesbrough. Anyone who finds them will be rewarded in some way George

Oh, you little treasures, John and Gertrude Toole are the missing people! I even found the other daughter, Norah, whom I knew about. Now all I havw to do is locate him on the 1881 census - is it complete?

Penny

Penny Report 9 Sep 2003 03:06

That's great! Glad they were the right ones. I think 1881 Census is complete as they were selling the CD's before it went on line. I did have a look for a John Otoole and found one born in 1867, Birmingham Warwick (which is what I think was indicated in 1901 Census). It shows him as a boarder and the head of the household was Joseph Henry Souter. Perhaps this is your John? Good luck Penny
