Jan I have a Kezia Manns as nurse at 42 Western Rd convalesent Home St Mary Magdalen Hastings (It sounds Catholic) So if you type Kezia's name in on family search. org, 1849 that will come up. Also patients names from all over the country Joan |

Had a look in my 'little book' only thing that I can find that has any similarity is ......Sister of Mercy..A nun belonging to a religious order. Could she have been a nursing nun? Anne |

I found this entry on a UK History of Nursing website: What is an 'SMS'nurse in the 1881 census? SMS or 'Subsidiary Medical Services' is a technical term used by the census office personnel employed to classify occupational groups in the 1881 census. The person referred to may have no training or formal qualification and may simply use the term 'nurse' by custom and practice. This may or may not be the same as SM!! Alison |

Which convalescent home was that? I live in St. Leonards, which is next door to Hastings. I wonder if the SM meant something like Six Monthly - where the nurse looks afer a new baby for the first six months until the nanny takes over. Jan. |
