Hi Anne, Could he have changed his name by deed poll? Could they do that in those days, and does anyone know where you might find records of this? I've got a similar problem with my own family tree and would be interested to know. Vanda

Family Records Office has adoption certificates for all official adoptionsin England and Wales. Otherwise he could have taken name of stepfather or foster parent
