Thank you very much one and all! I have tried locating him on the 1881 census but unfortunately no joy. I think I may have better luck on the 1901 census! Many thanks again everyone. Best wishes Helen

hiya a couple of ideas - if you look up the name of the informant in the 1881 census on LDS does it give you any more information about the location? also Bob Evans (a chaplain in cardiff) has a site that shows a couple of St Mary's churches in Cardiff. If you type in Bob Evans church site on a search engine it'll come up. Good luck from Ann (in Cardiff)

I think i have the answer! St Mary's was a parish in Cardiff re-established after the boom of the docks. I found this quote by typing St Mary's Cardiff onto Google! ' when Cardiff's port began to expand as an outlet for coal exports, and the population of the area around the docks expanded the 2nd Marquis of Bute, donated a new site for a church in Bute Street, and backed the re-establishment of St Mary's as a separate Parish. This was achieved in 1846. The present St Mary's covers the redeveloped area of Cardiff Bay.' ALison

Hi Helen There is a Clare Gardens in Cardiff it's in between Grangetown and Riverside and there is a parish of St Mary's.I think it's call Clare Gardens as there are two small playing gardens either side of the road.Hope this helps Jill.

dont know if this helps but theres also a St Mary Street in Cardiff,not to far from Clare Gardens...

There is a Clare Gardens in Cardiff in the Riverside district near to the Millenium Stadium. You can find this on multimap(.)com. St Mary's Street was the main shopping street in Cardiff before Queen Street was pedestrainised and developed. They are about half a mile apart as an estimate. Alison

There is a place called St Mary Hill in road atlas. Nearer to Bridgend than Cardiff. Just below junction 35 of M4. Maz. XX

Could anyone please tell me if there is a place called St Mary? I recently received a death certificate for 1898 which gives the deceased address in Cardiff and the informant (who was her brother) as 2 Clare Gardens, and what looks like St Mary. Typed this in my search engine and it came up with loads of church websites! Help!!! Many thanks Helen
