Thanks everyone for all your replies and tips!!! I had thought of making a date up, but wasn't sure whether to or not. I ended up yesterday phoning them and they said as it is a trial that they had a 50 year restriction of some sort and that if it was in the last 50 years then you have to know the exact date. She didn't know why. It did cost a bit more by phone though, think it was £8.50p. Thanks again, this is going to be a long and expensive road!!!

Sarah I cheated as well when ordering a death certificate. I think I just put the q/e date and the cetificate arrived no problem. I'd just make sure that every other detail you fill in is correct so that they can easily verify if it's the right certificate or not. Rachel

Hi. Not sure that the GRO would approve of this tip but I had a similar problem when ordering a certificate. I made up a date of death just so the field was completed. All my other information was correct and complete and my certificate arrived a few days later. Who says cheating doesn't work?!

Morning all! If the year of death is within the last 50yrs you have to order by phone, either at GRO or the local register office. Daft if you ask me!! Debbie

Iraina. If the death was in the last 50 years you have to put the date of death. I am having the same problem. Know the month but don't know the day. Sarah.

Hi. I've just worked through the process of ordering a death cert on the 1837 site. Did not encounter problems without entering d of d. Don't know what else to suggest.

Try sending off direct to the Register office for the area where this person died. Unless you know for sure the exact date, we have no way of finding out this info. When I apply for certificates I just give the details as mentioned in the previous answer to your query and then I get the certificate and it gives me the exact date. I think it is cheaper to do it direct to the Register office for the area concerned. I pay 7.00GBP for certificate.

Hi Anne, Thanks for your help, but I have just tried and it came up with an error saying that I must put in the date of death. Don't know what to do now??? Any ideas? many thanks, Iraina p.s. I am trying to order from the GRO website.

Hi. You will get the exact date of death when you receive the certificate. The 1837 website gives you the quarter in which the death was registered, the vol no. and the page no. which you have to quote when ordering certificate. Hope this helps.
