How can I find out how a street was numbered in the past? for example my nan's road orginally only had 20 or so houses and her house was number 14 but when more houses were added the whole street was renumberd and it was and still is number 63. How do I find out if this has happened in other places? Shelli

Shelie, An old Taxi drivers trick to help look for House numbers was. . . . Numbers started at the end of the Road /Street which was nearest the Centre of the City or Town. With the Odd numbers were on your Right hand side. and the Even numbers on your Left hand side. If the Road was parallel to the City/Town Centre, then the numbers started from the Main/Major Road which went to the City Centre. Hope this might help. MIKE.

Thanks for you input Rosemary Patrica and Michael. Nan's road is the opposite to what you said Michael. odd on left and evens on right and the last street i lived in was consecutive. Will ask at local archive next time i'm there and see if they can shed some light on it Thanks again Shelli
