I'm stuck I have an ancestor who was a militiaman in 1811 at the time of his sons birth in alston, cul. I have no idea what regiment he belonged to so can't search muster rolls as was suggested to me in the webchat. Does anyone know of any war which happened in the early 1800's? or know of any good sites? Any suggestions appreciated George

Heather, have just had a look and it is the website for Achievements of Canterbury who advertise in lots of mags and provide a Genealogy service. ie you pay them and they research and produce a tree for you. Can't see any searchable indexes on-line. Maz XX

Update I'm still not much further on though have discovered that between 1808 & 1812 Militia service was compulsory. I still don't understand why on his sons baptism he stated that 'He was'nt of this town' Even though he was born and brought up there. Would he say that if he had been living away for several years? Have'nt succeeded in finding anyone to look him up at the NA yet. George
