Can anyone tell me what was so special about the Special Wireless Section of the Royal Signallers. What made them different from the ordinary signallers?

Trish. Been trying to do a bit of research on this subject myself. My Grandfather was a signalman in WW2(1942-1946). Not sure what the difference is. Sorry I can't realy help you. Sarah.

Trish. Try contacting the Royal Signals Regimental Museum. It used to be at Blandford Forum, but may have moved. Suspect these units may have been involved with French Resistance or somesuch. I@ll be watching the site to see what you find

Thank you all - have now sent in a request to Blandford Forum and just waiting for reply. Although I'm pretty sure William has cracked it for me. Trish

Have now received the following reply from a very helpful Mike Butler at the Royal Signals Museum. Special Wireless Sections were small units used in WW2 to monitor and intercept enemy radio signals for intelligence purposes, and were a part of a larger Company sized organisation. Signaller is a generic term for a person involved with the transmission and reception of messages. In the Royal Signals, until recently, the private soldier's rank was Signalman. With the recent inclusion of ladies in the Corps the rank has been changed to Signaller. Generally all Royal Signals personnel could be called signallers.

Keith, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. It explains a few 'muddled' stories we get from older relatives.
