war grave......help please

can anyone help me with this?....on the CWGC ive managed to find a rellie but i dont understand what all the information on the grave means.... the first part says PLY/X 1190, (the first part im assuming is for Plymouth which is where hes buried) and also after his name it says SEC.C.CONS. Is this a rank?? any help would be brilliant... Many thanks |

Demelza. At one time Marines for example came under one of 3 dDivisions of which Plymouth was one. There were thus 3 numbering systems. This might be such a case, Don't know what the rest means yet. Can you give me his name so I can see the whole entry on CWGC. |

hiya keith, his name is Harry Friend, died; 22 jan 1947. Wondering now whether it might be the section of the cemetary hes buried in maybe?....another quickie is that he shot himself in a public park...ive tried finding entries in the local paper in the days after but came to a blank maybe because the records dont go that far back...any ideas? Thanks and any help you can give would be fantastic..... Demelza :) |

Hi Demelza. As I thought, he was a Marine and as I said the three Marine Divisions operated seperate sets of numbers. The entry on CWGC will have told you that Plymouth Devonport was home to the Royal Marine Barracks for the Plymouth Division. I think you are right that the Sec C Cons may well mean Section C of the Communal Graves?. He may well have died of wounds sustained in WWII. I have friends in Plymouth and will ask them to have a look around. Where are you. Regards. Keith |

Hiya Keith, Im in lincoln but went down to plymouth recently to see family and while i was there i managed to find his grave and take a look. Its all exactly the same as on the cwgc. He shot himself in a public park which im assuming must have been in the local papers but i cant find any sites with records of this. Any advice would be brilliant. Do you think that maybe the library in Plymouth would hold back dated newspaper copies?? Demlza |

Hi Demelza. Glad to know we are on the right lines. Do you have the death certificate? I would imagine that a large place like Plymouth would have a long standing newspaper which would have a report on such an incident. Also there is a Newspaper Library in Colindale NW London which holds past newspapers. Try phoning them for initial advice. Regards |
