Di Thanks for that. I also have to get round to researching the Royal Artillery. My grandfather was in the RA during the late 1800s. I have his medals. Richard

For anyone who is looking for relatives from bygone years in any of the services, I found a very useful book in the Family History Centre library yesterday. It tells you where to look for all kinds of information and gives the reference #, where to find said information. For example I'm interested in the Royal Artillery, 1840"s, and this book tells me where to find overseas birth indexes, Army Chaplains returns 1796 t0 1880, military deaths overseas, Army Chaplains returns 1796 to 1880, and army muster rolls and pay lists which often tell you details of marital status and children etc. There are also references to discover where certain regiments, ships or squadrons were at certain times. The book is called Researching English Occupations-Defence Series, and it's by Dr Penelope Christensen who has written a few other books which would be useful I should think. It's put out by Heritage productions and is available at WWW(.)genealogystore(.)com, and I should think it's probably available at other FHC's, or public libraries. Two other sites I've come across recently, good for research are WWW(.)silversurfers(.)net/interests-genealogy.html and www(.)4trudy(.)co(.)uk/census Di.
