is there a way of tracking down my birth certificate and other details through a link on the web

Jayne, you can order the certificate from the record office where you were born and usually don't need the reference if you know your own DOB. I had to order a new one when I moved to Holland - to satisfy the residence requirements the certificate could not be more than 6 months old (hilarious!).
