Ok so does employer mean that they may have employed people but did not necessarily own the business? Still a bit confused...

Hi Angela Could own account mean that they didn't work as they had something such as a private income? Just a thought Jeanette, E.Yorks

Own account definetely did not mean they were not working, that appears as 'living of own means'. The 2 specific examples I have are a Licenced Victualler - own account and a Hotel Manager - employer. I think the first means that they own the business but wanted to be sure.

Hi Angela My understanding that an employer was self employed and empoying others, and "own account" was self employed working on their own. I'm sure some one will correct me if I'm wrong. Regards Maxine

Mmm ... but that does not really make sense as this was a large pub and he definetely did not run it on his own!! I looked on the glossary of terms on the census site but that did not really help.

Hi Angela It could have been one of the famous census takers mistakes! Regards Maxine

I thought own account meant living on own means,savings/investments etc,but when I found ggrandmother it said on census, own account/bottle hawker,so I took it as she was self employed Hawking bottles, Kathleen

maybe as a Licensed Victualler he actually owned the pub, rather than renting it from somone else?
