Thomas Tanner 29, Louisa 26, Thomas 2, Elizabeth 3 all appear in 1881 but all but Elizabeth have disappeared by 1901. All were born in Essex and were living in Dagenham in 1881. Could someone very kindly look in 1891? Many thanks

Just a thought, are you sure it's the correct Elizabeth you have found in 1901? Could there be another Elizabeth Tanner of same age? It seems strange that the family has disappeared (emmigrated?)and left the daughter.

Thanks for your thoughts on this one...but I know I have the right Elizabeth (in fact, even in 1881 she was living with her grandparents rather than her parents) and father Thomas is stated as deceased by the time of her marriage in 1902. But it seems strange that both her mother and brother have disappeared. So frustrating...and keeps me awake at night sometimes!

As Thomas had died by 1902, it seems quite likely that Louisa had remarried and Thomas junior was known by his Mum's new name on the 1901 Census. Do you have 1901 decoder downloaded? You could try putting in Louisa (no surname) with the right age and place of birth, and Thomas jnr (no surname) with age and place of birth and see if the decoder comes up with any matches. I was going to try and do this for you but can't get in to LDS site at the moment to find place of birth for these two. Let me know details if you want me to try.

Thanks all. The decoder tip is excellent. I tried it and although found one match it wasn't the right one as the towns of birth were different from my two. Also there are so many Thomas and Louisas that I kept the age fairly precise...and of course, our ancestors seem fairly flexible regarding ages on censuses. Rather hope they didn't contract something like diptheria but, of course it's quite possible. But I guess it would be boring if we could solve our genealogical mysteries too easily!

Vanessa Have you tried just searching for Thomas Jnr? If his mother remarried he may have kept his surname. I found an ancestor living with his mother and her new husband by doing this. Lynne
