LDS 1881.

How is it that the LDS has the monopoly on the 1881 cencus on line. We keep seeing messages to say that the info is incomplete or incorrect. I see that it is not included in the new Freecen site nor is the 1901, which is pay per view. Has someone bought `the rights' or something, as you would with a book? Sue.

Susan The Church of the Latter Day Saints (the Mormons) were given the task by the PRO to transcribe the 1881 Census. This was originally brought out as a set of CDs but is now on their web site, family search. It is complete, but like everything that has been transcribed there are mistakes in it. Perhaps the 1881 Census is not included in the FreeCen site because it is already FREELY available on the LDS site. I cannot comment on the 1901 Census being available on FreeCen, except to say that the PRO (Government) are not going to give away that information for free when they are making money on their own 1901 Census web site. Get my drift? Hope this clears up a few things for you. Yours Vera, Manchester

Hi Susan I would agree entirely with everything Vera says. But would also add that the 1881 census is no more or less error prone than any other piece of transcribed data online, which is all of it! You will find mistakes in it all if you look. The IGI information however is a different matter, not all of this is based on facts,such as Parish registers , but some is input purely from church members personal records - they could say Mickey Mouse was their grandfather and it would be entered! But really any information that you take from any online source that you cannot personnally verify, should be treated as possibly flawed, and be verified with a second source of data, such as a certificate. Having seen the quality of various original census records and BMD certificates, both UK and US, its suprising there's not a lot more errors in the transcriptions.

Exactly my point David! I do some transcribing myself and some of those records are awful to read!!

Thank you for the replys - The IGI can be very odd, I have a family on my husbands side who are on it - out of 11 children nine are named, two appear as `living', one cannot possibly be alive as the birth date would make her a living legend and the other we know definitely died in the 1960's. Having said that I have found some very usefull information and will take heed to check and double check results. Sue. P.S. Many thanks to all transcribers without whom we would not be able to do as much as we can from the comfort of home!
