Deborah, Thank you for looking. Robin - I have looked at this entry and have the birth cert for John, but when i spoke to the Devon G.S. they said it couldn't be him as Wellington wasn't in Devon, i did ask if the boarders could have been changed but again they said no. I don't know whether to proceed with this family or not because i have no other evidence. Thank you for your time Eileen

Crista - yes this is the family - i have the marriage certificate and all his children's certificates but not once is his middle name on them. He commited suicide and on his death cert it has his name as John Edward Cox but the newspaper report has it as Edwin - an eldery relation thinks it might have been Edwin, but he has a son named Edward!! The thing i need to prove is Where he was born to be able to trace his family.

In 1881 there's a John Cox, father Francis, age 10, said to be born at Wellington, which is less than 4 miles from the Devon border My grandmother always told everybody she was born in Hertfordshire, and we believed her, and that's what got recorded on her death cert. Turns out the village was near Herts, but actually in Cambridgeshire, and always has been. In that case I think it was a snob thing, she thought Herts was posher

Eileen, Are you sure you have found the right John Cox on the 1901 census? The reason I ask is because the John Cox you mention is married to Edith and has a child born c1898 called Willie. Using that district and the year Willie was born, I found a John Cox marrying a Edith Ayling in Jun 1898 in Dartford on FreeBMD. There is no mention of a middle name given for John. In my limited experience so far, middle names or middle initials are usually mentioned in marriage records. Crista

Thank you to everyone for their help. Debbie - No he wasn't a carpenter, but a labourer Tricia - I have tried the freebmd with no luck Maxine i have looked at the 1881 census but there is no Jon Cox with a father Francis in the Devon area and i have been on the LDS site with no luck either. I have been told by an elderly rellie that he was a freemason (he thinks)but they will only give me the name and date of birth and what meeting place he attended all for £30 i was hoping to avoid this but i think that is the only way to go Thank you again for all your help Eileen

Hi Eileen Have you looked on the 1881 census yet? If not I would suggest that as your next port of call. It is free to view on the Latter Day Saints site(see the links page on the left). You should be able to put in his name, and age range based on the differences you have (plus I'd give it another couple of years to be on the safe side), and if you enter the county of birth as Devon, and leave the census place as any, and search and see what you get!. You may then be able to find more information on him on the same site by looking at the International Genealogical Index (IGI)- but bare in mind this information is unverified. Good luck & let us know how you get on. Best Regards Maxine

Can anyone suggest what to do next! I have a John E Cox on the 1901 census born in Devonshire county not known. On his marriage cert his year of birth would be 1870, and on his death cert 1872. His middle name could be either Edward or Edwin. In 1901 he was in Kent and his fathers name was Francis Could someone please point me in the right direction on how to confirm his birth and place, or how to find him on other censuses Thank you Eileen
