Can anyone advise me how I can find my g grandad's birth. I have his marriage cert and death. The death does not show his birth date on, which I thought it would.I have searched 1837,1881,1901 and free bmd but nothing. He had a brother with an unusual name of archibald and I cannot find him either. I need the birth to find out the mothers maiden, as on the 1881 census says she was married(so she is down as her married name). No sign of the dad. Please help.I would have thought he would have to have had a birth cert to join the army. Catherine

Suggest you post the names and dates and someone might be able to double check the look-ups.

Catherine Both certificates should have his age - if they match you should be able to work out an approximate year to search. I would still do a + - 5 years though as ages were not always accurate.

Ok Here goes Brian. William Brown b 1869 Manchester Archibald Brown b 1867 Llandudno(or this could have been wrong on census, could be Manchester) James Brown b 1870 Liverpool. Found about 4 of these, seems a bit stupid to pay for all 4. William Brown in 1887 married at 18 to Catherine Taylor same age. He died in France age 47 on 20th July 1916. Rank 24770. Found James and William in 1901. The ref number that I did see on 1837 was in the Apr Qtr ref 8D313 sent for cert and not the right one. as it lists the father as George, yet his marriage says his father is william. Any help or advice much appreciated. Going mad Catherine

Catherine which area of the country did the Brown family live? This info would help in any searches. Have you tried the Lancashire B.M.D site ? Bren Mills

The family were from Manchester. Round Bradford/Ancoats, Miles Platting etc. Wrote to the Records office in Manchester before and they said unless I know the parish there was nothing they could do. No-one seemed bothered to help.\ Catherine
