GENUKI and FBMD both have information on registration districts and the current office to apply to.

Don't confuse register offices and record offices, register offices do certificates and nothing else. You can ask them yes/no questions to avoid buying the wrong cert, but they won't tell you anything else But I've heard a rumour that the Sunderland office supplies images of the original register entries, with the actual signatures of the parties, whereas most local register offices are still writing out copies by hand

OK, this ought to be a simple question for someone to answer! Do registry offices provide the same information as that of the Family Record Centre in London? Or in other words, do registry offices just have index entries or will I able to find info such as names of parents that normally you would only be able to find by purchasing a certificate. My hunch is that you'll still need the certificate to be certain! Can anyone also tell me where information for the Houghton and Easington areas would be kept. I have a feeling it's Sunderland but I know that Durham has a lot of archival information. Thanks Andy.
