Bit confused about Gedcom

I had an email from Estelle at GC this morning. The baptism dates on Gedcom data is soon to be added to the GC format enabling many of us that have uploaded their details this way to benefit from the dates being there as well as just names alone. She said that this is in the testing stage at the moment but they had no plans to incorporate it to include burial dates. I presume that we shall have to delete our present tree (those of us who have data missing) and start again. Not really a problem. Margaret

Terry, yes, the LDS paf is fine.Easy to use, and exciting when you print out your first charts. A few months ago I knew nothing about genealogy and only a little more about computers, but am very happy with present situation!

Hi Vanessa I have been thinking about downloading PAF5 from LDS (mainly because it's free). Do you find it an easy programme to use as I'm a bit of a computor dinorsaur, so for me it's a case of the simpler the better !! Terry

If you open your family tree software, you should be able to save your PAF file as a gedcom. You may need to look at the help pages for precise information.

Thank you very much Genes Admin. Now I know that what I have is not a gedcom...but then, I wonder, how do I get one?!

You can upload your family tree to the site via a gedcom file. This file should have the suffix .ged. If it has the suffix .paf then you will not be able to upload the file. If you have any difficulties uploading your file then please contact the support team.

But ...as a warning - if you download your gedcom programme to GC, much of the date and place data wil not be transferred ---- which is the subject of a very heated debate on the tips board under 'your details' I personally have A GC tree, and have entered living rellies (mostly) with initials only. I am also making another tree, not visible to anyone but me and my fambly as I choose - but it is tedious to make separate entries. However, entries on the GC tree need to have date and place for this thing to work - and people to make connections and often Gedcom entries don't carry this vital info. Off soap box now, Rosi

Gedcom is a universal part of all family history software. If you have been doing genealogy for a while on your pc you may have gathered a large family. To save you from having to retype to genesconnected for example you just download your gedcom. George

I am also a little confused about Gedcom so much so that I decided to leave well alone. Now after reading this post I wonder what of if I should have used Gedcom for. Sorry about this but I am new, you must forgive my ignorance (well I hope you do). If anyone can help me out I will no longer be in ignorance then, hey presto! I will be in the know. Val

I'm a bit confused too. I haven't got Gedcom or similar, but the instructions say to download BEFORE entering info on tree, does this mean I need to delete info, download, then re enter info? Is there sdomeone out there who can help??

Slightly confused. Rather a silly and basic question! I have all my data in the PAF5 programme I downloaded from the LDS site. So...is this a gedcom...or not?
