A big thank you to everyone that answered my query about tracing ancestors in Ireland. A few useful tips were disclosed which I will follow up. Wish me luck and, once again, many thanks.

Bernard if you get your mothers birth cert, this will tell you her parents' names inc.her mothers maiden name and also the adress where her parents were living at time of her birth.you then have a couple of avenues open to you.you could obtain the cencus for that area[ England or Ireland] to the nearest year of her birth and see if they are still in the area.It will tell you where the family lived and names and ages of all other members of the household.you can loan the cencus you require on film from your local family history centre for just over a couple of pounds. another thing you will be able to do is ;from her birth cert you will have her parents names and also where they were living at the time of marriage and again your family history centre can help you .first try their english records fora marriage, you should be able to educate a guess from your mums d.o.b. of appx year when they may have married. If you can't find their marriage listed in the english records the f.h.c will be able to order the irish marriage records on film for you,if they do not already have them. When you make an appointment, tell them that you are a begginer and would like some help and they will help you.they have a lot of irish recrds already on film there and any they haven't got can be easily obtained. hope this is usefull to you, don't give up.Once you get your first lead you're on your way regards Catherine

Thanks,Margaret. It's just disheartening because I've been tracing the aforementioned families for nearly a year and can't get past the mid 1800's,yet with another family[english] I started tracing 3weeks ago, have already got back to the late 1600's! I won't give up,though because they're my favourites!

Bernard and Diane, Don't give up on them, they are out there somewhere. I had a similar situation and mentioned it on this board that I was looking for Reilly's in Ireland. I would have thought an almost impossible task. Someone suggested that the Reilly's came from County Cavan. I had a look on the IGI records and eventually found birth details for my GG Grandparents at the correct time in Cavan with the correct parents names. Hang in there guys! Regards Margaret

I am afraid I am having the same problem. All I have on ,my ancestors is the english census saying they were born in Ireland! Not even a county!I have three families with this problem;Tafe,Devaney and Morgan. I think my only hope is someone with more info researching the same family. If anyone knows any different, let Bernard and I into the secret!

Both my father's and mother's families came from Ireland to England between 1830 and 1850. The only information I have as to their origins has been fron the British Census. Has anyone any tips on tracing them back to Ireland, please?
