Hi there, I know that not everyone gets married but where can i go to find other information when i haven't found a marriage cert. and therefore don't know fathers name/occupation and possible addresses? I am looking for information on Walter Parr who "supposedly" got married to Elizabeth before 1881 census. She was already married to someone else before 1878... I found a Hackney refernce for 1878 but this isn't the right one as both parties were from London area.(My Walter was from Bristol, Elizabeth from lancashire) Also found Burton ref for 1880 but after contacting Staffs record office i was informed that spouse was "young spinster"....guess that means it's not Elizabeth! Where can i go from here? Thanks, Karen

Hi Karen, Had same problem few weeks ago with my gt gt grandparents but did eventually find their marriage on ancestry(the uk site). I put their name in individually and after a while found an index the was identical. The certificate showed the right ancestors, but they were married in a diffrent part of the country to what we thought. I tried to find your Walter on the ancestors site but unfortunately nothing. I also checked the census of 1891 (also on ancestors.) and came up with:- Walter Parr 36 married to Elizabeth 36, they had son Bruce who was 9 and daughter May who was 5. Walter was born in Bristol and Elizabeth was born in Lancashire. They were living in Smethwick in Staffordshire in 1891. I don't know if this is any help to you. Good Luck in finding the marriage date. Karen

Karen, If you want Walter's father's name and occupation you could order Walter's birth certificate. The 1881 census says he was born around 1854. Look through 1837 online to get the reference numbers. To get Lizzie's maiden name you could order Bruce's birth certificate. It looks like she wasn't being truthful about her age. In 1881 she is listed as being 34. Seems she adjusted her age in 1891 so she wasn't older than Walter. Crista

Hi everyone, Thanks for all the replies. In answer to some of the questions.... Susan- yes that's my 1881 census reference. By 1891 census Elizabeth was same age as Walter and her birth place had been Salford but now was Manchester. Crista - I've got Bruces birth cert which also shows that Elizabeth was married previously. She stated that they were married. As she had a child c1878(see 1881 census) and was noted as married in1881 i presumed that the marriage took place between 1878 and 1881. I have not checked out the Aston marriage but will probably do so- if she lied about her age she might have lied about being married! Karen - yes that's the right family from 1891 census. Do you know if there is any ref to Elizabeths children by previous husbands? Frank Rice c1870 born Derby, Derby Lizzie Rice c1872 born Derby, Derby Bertie Sutherland c1878 Born Derby, Derby Christine - Have seen 1857 Walter Parr but can not yet connect him as have not found the name "Banks" anywhere.Would feel better if i could at least confirm the same father....! Thanks again everyone - i really appreciate the feedback! Karen

Hi Karen, I managed to find the 'Rice' children but unfortunately not 'Bertie'. The only entry for Bertie Sutherland was a 22 year old born in Edinburgh and living in London. I also tried the names Albert, Herbert and Robert Sutherland but there were none born in Derbyshire. The results for Frank and Elizabeth are:- Frank aged 23 (b. Derby Derbyshire), a private in the Dorset regiment in Plymouth Devon. REF: RG12/1737, folio: 129, pg 10. and he was single. Elizabeth aged 19 (b. Derby, Derbyshire), general domestic servant at Longbridge house, Birmingham Road( i think this is the address as it was quite difficult to read on the transcript) Rednall, Kings Norton. REF: RG12/2349, folio 131, pg 7. Elizabeth was also single. Once again I hope these are the people you are looking for. best wishes Karen PS I also found another Frank Rice who was born in Derby he was 55. Could this have been Elizabeths ex husband? He was in a pub at the time the 1891 census was being carried out in Chesterfield(The Plough Inn, St Mary's Gate). the transcript said he was single.

Hi Karen, That's fantastic - it has to be them. As for the Frank Rice aged 55, i'm not sure - Haven't found Elizabeths marriage to Walter yet so havent even considered looking for previous marriage certificates! Thanks again - i really appreciate your help. Good luck with your own research, Karen P.S Life is full of coincidences - my family now live in Devon but years ago we lived in Kings Norton!
