Married Strand 1898, single Kensington 1901?

Hello folks I have found my great great aunt on the 1901 census as single and living with her mother. On freebmd (and I transcribe for them so understand how it works) I have a marriage of the same great great aunt in 1898. Did she not tell her mum she got married? What's going on here? Just in case anyone recognises the names it's Rose Ernestine GAU (sadly transcribed as GAN) and Karl Von Arnold. Married Strand 1898. Single in 1901. Signed puzzled of Cardiff |

Hi Ann Is it possible that the marriage was annulled? or that she was widowed (or even divorced!)and had gone back to using her maiden name? How on earth you'd go about checking that out though I have no idea. Regards Maxine |

It is possible I suppose that he left her to return to his country. His name looks Austrian but might be German. George |

I think I've found old Von Whatsit on 1901 census (he's Austrian) but he's married to someone else - with children. All I can think of is that someone in my family has copied something down wrong. I think I'll send off for the marriage certificate to clear it up. After all, what's £7 to avoid a scandal! Good luck to you all A |
