Where else can I get a birth date from?

Donna, I have found that the age on a Death Certificate is not reliable, the person that registers a death very often guesses the age, so if you do manage to get hold of the Death certificate just be a bit flexible. Personally I think they have very little information to offer. June,Nr.Preston.Lan.

Marion - I thought that most (if not all) death certificates gave an 'Age at death' You don't usually get the d.o.b but can wrk it out from that. I have many death certificates and not one of them has the age at death missing. Death cert ages seem to be more reliable than marriage certs though - on marriage certificates people often airbrushed their ages to suit their spouse/peers/in-laws! -Kat

Unfortunately I dont know when he died either. I have not tried the free ancestry trial as was warned off due to unsafe credit card section, have tried the others though, you are a transcriber arent you Andrea? Maybe you could read it, but it really is quite bad. HALS cant find him so will have to try St Albans, if not then GRO I guess? Name is George Thresher born 1856. Thanx ladies.

Irene, You must have been lucky to get a d.o.b on a death certificate. I have quite a few and not one has a birth date. If they had my tree would have been so much easier, especially since my ancestors travelled a lot! I have to resort now to employment and medical records with the hope of some clues. Marion

Let us know who it is you are after. Maybe someone else can decipher the records on the 1837 site. Have you tried all the other census sites - 1881 (Latter Day Saints), 1891 (Ancestry free trial) and 1901 (pay to view)?

Donna, the GRO will search within a year via post/telephone application but it costs about £4 more than if you can supply the reference, Marian

I dont knwo where else on line to look, the birth is not on Free BMD, the pages are illegible on 1837 online, my local records office only hold receords for this county? What am I missing here? I know the year but that isnt enough for the records office. Any advice anyone can give I would be extremely grateful. Donna
