Alexander - get the book Tracing your Ancestors in the PRO by Amanda Bevan from your library - it's got loads of info on Army records. S.

Thanks for you replies. Yes, the dates are correct. I wonder if maybe he died from his wounds after the war, as his wife and 2 young children appear on the 1861 census, his wife being a widow then.

Alexander - your best bet would be the PRO at Kew, they can also help you to find his regiment. Sue.

I'm looking for information on my GGGGrandfather William CURTIS who died some time between 1857-1861. A notebook left by my Grandfather says he "ran away to join the army." and "fought in the Crimean" Are there any records of soldiers in that war which might list him? I don't know his rank or regiment but I am prepared to do a lot of searching! I just need to know where to start... TIA Alex
