I personally think she lied about her age.She lied about her age to appear the same age or younger than her husband. It wouldn't do be older than the man of the house would it??? I think she was born in poss aug 1900 so she was a few months old at time of 1901 census. think about it it's plausible Shelli

All research should be checked and double checked. I have got research from one area of my family from census and the calculated DoB for some of the members of the family are all different. Ranging from 2/3 years around the date!! Even BMD records can be wrong. My gt grand father is listed as being one age when he died but his birth record doesnt tally up with the age at death!!

Andrew My mother in law told me her dad was 8-9 years older than her mum. It turned out he was only one year older! Moral - Always check info given by older relatives and never assume they are correct. Lynne

No, it was the 1837 site where I was previously looking and not able to find her birth. I was under the impression that this was a complete list as far as all registered births were concerned. Yeah, I know that the FreeBMD site is being added to all the time.

Andrew - FreeBMD is far far from complete - you'd best to check on 1837 site as the entry should surely be there - either for the 3rd or 4th quarter Graham

Thanks for your replies, folks. Well, my great-uncle to whom she was married was also born in 1903 and my mother doesn't think that she was older than he was, which makes her supposed entry on the 1901 census all the more curious. I wasn't sure if the BMD index lists were incomplete or not. I know that they've re-indexed some of the early years, which were a nightmare to search through on the 1837 site. I also thought that it was compulsory to register births after 1875 - although I can well believe that some probably didn't. I will have another check in the index list for some of other quarters before making my next step. Cheers, Andy.

Andrew - is it possible that her birth was registered late? This often happens, and even though you checked the third quarter, it would be smart to check the fourth quarter as well. Graham

Andrew it is possible that the DOB on the death certificate is wrong. That information is given by whomever registered the death and your grandmother might have told fibs about her age!! Just a suggestion. Kathleen

My great-aunt died in 1975 and I found her entry in the list of deaths for the first quarter for that year. As some of you'll know, they were by then listing their DOB and so, I found that she was born in August 1903 (can't remember the exact date). Given that info, I tried looking it up in the birth entries for the third quarter of 1903, but she was not listed. This has got me puzzled. To add to the confusion, I found her listed on the 1901 census, aged 8 months! I have the correct family as her sisters who are listed, match up with what I know. I know the 1901 census is a bit dodgy but my only guess at present is that two daughters were born with the same name, however perhaps the first one died in infancy. Hope that didn't sound too confusing! Andy.
