Hi everyone, Thanks to some help I have managed to find my gr gr grandparents, however I can't find their marriage. He was born in 1856 and she was born in 1860 and they had their first child in 1880, was it common for people to marry under the age of 16yrs in those times? I have found a man with the same name who married at the right time though he married in Middlesborough and mine didn't move there until 1881. Laurie

Laurie In 1929 the minimum age for marriage was raised to 16 for both boys and girls - with parental consent or a licence if under 21. Before that it was 14 for boys and 12 for girls. Hope this helps answer your question.

It was legal for people to marry under 16 but I have not come across any (although I'm sure someone will have found relatives who did). What I have found however is that some couples married AFTER the first or even second child had been born. So try going forward in time instead of backwards.
