can someone please tell me when the marriage entries started cross refering suanmes. For instance when i married it showed Hanley Michelle and Coulby, Coulby being my hubby's surname. I know this hasn't always been done and wondered if anyone knew when exactly it started. Many Thanks Shelli

Think you'll find it was 1912 when spouse's surname appeared. Graham

Um! call me dim - but whose name would you look for, the husband or the wife if it's before 1910, and if you know both names would you cross ref. and look for both? Sue.

Michelle, I have a marriage certificate from 1863 showing the wife's full maiden name as well as the husband's names, occupations, residence - also their fathers' names and occupations. Is this what you mean? Kathy

I did'nt explain that very well did I. If I was looking on 1837 online, would I find say Ted Smith and ALSO Joan Brown the person he married in the same entry - so that if I only knew the name of Ted Smith and looked him up would it tell me he married Joan Brown and vice versa? Sue.

Susan It's listed separately so always cross reference. Once you find one partner it's relatively easy to find the other, try FreeBMD first though. Lynne

Susan - No you wouldn't find the names of both people in the same entry. However after 1912 they did give the surname of the other person. So for example John Smith - Brown - London - 3a 450 Jane Brown - Smith - London - 3a 450 To get the other person's full name you have to look for their record once you have their surname.

Susan, both parties to a marriage are separetely indexed, If you know that Jane Brown married Fred Smith you should look up both their names, ie look at both Smith and Brown, the references should both be the same, then you know they married each other not two other people. If you dont know who they married, you will find lots of Jane Browns but wont be sure you have the correct one, except that after 1912 the indexes are very neatly cross referenced so that the Smith entry will name Jane Brown and the Brown entry will name Fred Smith, there will still be two separate entries for the one marriage. If you find the names and the numbers dont corespond they are not married to each other. Hope that helps Pam
