Does anyone know of any websites telling you the origins of surnames? The ones I am interested in are Dent, Crowe, Eke, Shreeve and Dobbs, perhaps someone already knows the origins of these? I would be very grateful. Thanks, Meryl. |

Hi Meryl I put in the words ´origins´ and ´surnames´ on the Google search page and the first web site that came up is for family chronicle - look quite good but I´ve only had a quick look. Jeannie |

Meryl In the 'Dictionary of British Surnames': DENT - name of place in west Yorkshire. CROW(E) - same as the bird. EKE - nothing listed SHREEVE - means Sheriff, also SHRIEVE(S) and SHRIVE(S). DOBB - pet form of Robert in the 13th century in Yorkshire, Cheshire, Lancashire and Staffordshire. Vera Manchester LAN |
