I have found in my deceased fathers papers a small typewritten receipt, that gives him away to the couple I have always considered to be my grandparents. He was born in the workhouse and his mother was in service at some big house His birth certificate shows no father. My ancesters now stop at the date of 1914 Where do I go from here.

Brian Is there is a birth surname on the piece of paper? If so that should help. Contact the local authority social services department in the area where his adoptive parents lived they may be able to help you trace his birth parents. Good luck. Lynne

Lynne Yes i do have a birth surname of the mother but no entry of the father. He was born in the the workhouse and I am unable to find any list of residents for 1914. There are no adoption papers only this slip of paper. Were you able to give away children in 1914 without the authorities having some imput I wonder. Regards Brian

Brian As the adoption wasn't official, social services probably won't be able to help. Do you have your father's birth cert? As you have the the surname of his birth mother you could try searching for a birth record for her (guessing her to be quite young when your father was born). I know its a long shot but worth a try. Sorry I can't advise any further. Lynne

Brian, I know when I have searched Parish Records, although there was no fathers name provided on the birth certificate, sometimes the father was listed in these records. If your father was baptised before he was "adopted" there could be an entry in the Parish Records. The clergy usually knew what was going on at "the big house" anyway and would probably make a note. Also the mother didn't like to lie if it was anything to do with church. Worth a try. Val, Sydney, Australia.
