MINNIE Driver's real name is Amelia, so try Minnie. I have seen a few Minnies dotted around the birth indexes, so the name was used at times.

Also try AMY, AMI, MILLY, MILLIE, and LEAH.

Have you tried searching under her middle name too? A lot of my relatives were using their middle names in the censuses.

If you're still stuck, try the baby naming websites, because they sometimes have a section dedicated to nicknames. I normally use www.babynamer.com.

I checked the first name book in the library today. The alternative names given for Amelia were: Milly, Millie, Amalia. Amelie, Amalie, Emilia and Emile. I wondered about Melia too. Ann Glos

Have you considered that Ann or Emily may have been other first names? A great deal of my family were known by their middle names. I had an Amelia on my family tree (Millie) but she was also from time to time known as Blanch. Very confusing but I later found out that Blanche was her birth name but she was always known as Millie - except on the birth, christening, marriage and death records of course!!

Does anyone know what, if any, abbreviations might have been used for the name Amelia? Would Ann or Emily be used? Early nineteenth century. Thanks.
