Thanks James but the pubs I am trying to find are in Portsmouth. I've found some detail by using google (I know at least one was demolished in 1987) but I want to know where I can find out more detail for the period 1881 to at least 1940. I know my ancestors were living in the same pub in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses. Jacky, for Police, do you know which county you are looking at finding information for? Some counties have a history section in the website of the local constabulary e.g. http://www.hants.gov.uk/hchs/ for Hampshire.

I have found out some of my family were pub landlords between at least 1881 and 1901. Is there a good resource for finding out more about this "profession"?
