Its the site for Births, Marriages and Deaths. Basically its free to search but its not totaly complete so its a hit and miss however always search there first before going on to 1837 online as this is a pay per view, not that expensive but takes for ever to trawl through dates if your uncertain.

From the 1891 info it should be possible to find George, and Harriet's family, in the 1881, but nothing leaps out at me Looks like the surname has probably been mistranscribed in the 1901. In that case, you have to guess it or find them using other clues. Trouble is, if for some reason they weren't together on census night, there's not much else to recognise them with Maybe you need Beattie's birth cert. If she was born in 1901, that should tell you where they were and what George's occupation was, very close to census night

Thanx Stephen I now have a copy to, if he was a fireman then that woudl make sense as I know he was a fireman in 1905 in the paper mills, but I dont know if a list of employees is held, if there was a union? A new question to ask perhaps.

The George Thresher on the 1891 census living with inlaws is age 35 and is living with a Mason ? Cousins age 54 and a widow. They are the only 2 occupants of 34 Nelson Street,West Ham. George is shown as born in Hertfordshire. His occupation is London County Council Fireman or Foreman. I am not sure which the image I am getting is not very clear. I cannot find Harriett under her married or single name. Good luck Stephen#

What is the website address for the free LDS site please? I've downloaded the 1901 decoder, but this could prove useful too. Thanks a lot.

Not sure about that one in 1874, if the other one is correct as son in law he is aged 35 that means born around 1856, but nothing on FreeBMD or family search, family search is illegible. Julie has offered to send me the son in law details with other family members and if Harriett is there then thats my man, however still stuck for a birth??

You guys are truly brilliant!! Will check thsi out myself on Free BMD, strange how they are not on the 1901? Henry Cousins could be right as they named a son Henry? Great stuff, cannot thank you enough xxx

Montmorency Report 14 Jul 2003 20:55

FreeBMD's got the marriage: 1891 Mar Hackney 1b 657 Thresher George 1891 Mar Hackney 1b 657 Cousins Harriet So they should be married in the 1891 census, but perhaps they were on honeymoon

Donna Report 14 Jul 2003 18:43

Have checked the 1901 census but I cannot be sure what George Thresher is the right one, I know that he died betwen 1905 and 1932 as he was deceased on my grnadfathers marriage certificate. Have trawled through the BMD records to find death, marriage in and arround approx years but nothing. All I know is that he was living in Apsley End in 1905 as he was working in a paper mill as a fireman. Any other ideas?

If you manage to obtain a GRO index for Harriet's death from 1837 online, then you could obtain the death certificate which would state whether she was a widow and what her husband's profession was. It would be a bit more info to go on. Also, I would be happy to do a census look up for 1891 if this would be of help.

Have you tried the census sites - 1881 and 1901? Do a search for their names and see if it comes up with anything. The LDS site is best (1881 census) as it gives the whole household and it is free. The 1901 Census also gives the household but you have to pay to view. Certainly for your Gran, you could try searching for her death as you know what year she died. The 1837 is good for dates from 1837 to about 1980, then it gets a bit sketchy. There is a minimum cost of a fiver and you will be able to view 50 sheets. It is best if you know the year and ideally, the quarter of the event you are looking for. Hope this helps.
