thanks all. it is good to know (at least in one way!) that registrars do sometimes get it wrong and that you can do something about it!!!

Hi all I had a certificate that was two year's out and queried it with the registrar over the phone and I was asked to send it back and they sent the right one free of charge with 8xfirst class stamps for my trouble Ann,Darlington

Ruth, Jill In my experience, Registrars will check an issued copy cert. against their master over the telephone. DON'T be deterred by a minion insisting that transcription errors are not possible - they are. If a clear transcription error HAS occurred, a replacement copy cert. should be supplied, free of charge, against return of the faulty one.

Ruth, I have had a similar problem. The date of death was written as "Thirtieth Nov". Fortunately, I knew the death occurred on the 13th. (It was registered on 14th!). I don't know whether there is anything you can do about it.

Hi Helen There is some info on FreeBMD on what to expect on certificates which I found very useful http://freebmd(.)rootsweb(.)com/Certificates(.)html . I also have a query...what can you do if you think info on a certificate bought has been mistranscribed? I've got one that says occupation "Northouse Master" when I'm pretty sure they mean "Workhouse Master". Can you make the registrar go back and check for free?!!! Thanks, Ruth

The certificate will have the place where the person was living at the time of death. It may also have their usual address if they were not at home. It will not identify parents or any other relatives unless the death is registered by a family member.

I have previously ordered birth and marriage certificates, usually to find parents names. I was wondering what information would be shown on a death certificate. The one I am thinking of ordering is dated 1893. Would this give an address of where the person was living at the time of death?
