Collette, We have now received a BC for James Thomas James who was born out of wedlock. The family are now reconciled to this, and in any case remember him and his dainty, diminutive wife as loving parents and grandparents to their four children and eight grandchildren. Crista, I have not enquired about the double naming, but I do not think it made any difference in our country, as even today we know of quite a few carrying the double name. In Wales the use of the patronymic system was used extensively - the'seventh son of a seventh son' sort of thing. Also, the prefix 'ap'as in 'from'. This latter one is still used in some instances. Pearl, In the US, the social security administration won't let you have the same forename and surname. I know someone who hasn't been able to adopt her husbands surname because of this. Does the same restriction apply in the UK? Maybe his name was really James James. Crista |

We have just come across a Death Certificate for my husband's grandfather. He was always known - indeed married and buried as - James Furlong. However, on the DC it reads 'James Furlong otherwise James Thomas James. We have applied for a Birth Certificate and are holding our breath in the hope that he was registered in the local area. So for those of us who are having difficulty finding a 'match' on the IGI or Census Returns that may be the reason. Pearl Harries |
