Some of the mental hospitals in and around Epsom were used as convalescant homes during WW11 and also WW1 I think. Horton, Manor, Long Grove and West Park were all quite close to Chessington. They are demolished mostly now and the grounds form part of a huge housing estate. Sue at Langley Vale Epsom SRY

Christine, If you go onto www(.)1914-1918(.)net/hospitals_uk. it gives a list of all the hopsiptals that were used in ww1 and what they were called during war time. My g Uncle was in Graylingwell, Chichester, but it was normally an asylum. Kim

Finally - after months of reading the tips board there's one I can help with. I grew up in Chessington and I've never been aware of a hospital, and it's not that big a place. The US had an army base in the Lovelace district which was possibly used for convalescence. Anyway, what I'm tyring to say is I will be home in the next couple of weeks to visit the latest addition to my family tree for the first time so if you'd like me to visit the library there or the nearest main one which is in Kingston I'm sure I'd be able to find something out for you. Or I could ask my Mum, she's always telling me she knows everything

I think that the Chessington that you want is the Defence Medical Services Rehabilitation Unit Chesington (DMSRU) Its A Rehabilitation unit for personnel of the RAF,Navy and Army. I am not sure if it is stll open now! but I am sure that the Minstry of defence would be able to help. Ian

I believe there was a forces residential centre at Chessington in Surrey, but do not know any more. Have you tried typing it into a search engine - I usually use Google.
