1901 Census - a bit of info about paying to search

There are pros & cons. If you opt for the 50p person and then opt (for another 50p) to see the whole household, you do, indeed, get the whole household, even if they run to several pages. But only in transcription (with all the associated risks). With the image option, you get the page-ful and you get the chance to read it for yourself (instead of the intriguing interpretations set upon it by others). But if your household runs to more than one page, you have to pay for the next image, too... and so on. Christine

Just a suggestion but ancestry has a 2 week trial which I'm using and it does all of that for free. I've not spent a single penny and found and printed away to my hearts content looking at possibles without any concern. Its exactly the same without the extra cost.

I agree , I only ever pay to see the actual census return, as Anne says you very often find the neighbours are family members too, so it is worth seeing the whole page for the sake of 25p.

Yes, thats the best way to download stuff. It means the YOU (and not a transcriber) can decide what the image says. Also I have, on several occasions, found more than one of 'my' families on the same page!! Two for the price of one. Anne

I have just paid to search the 1901 Census site and had great fun and made many discoveries - however, what I didn't realise at first was that if you search for a person and it comes up with a possibility, there are two ways to view. The first one is to click on the name of the person and this costs 50p - BUT it only gives the transcription for that single person. If however, you click on the image, it costs you 75p but it shows you the whole household. The images can be made bigger and the writing is not that bad to read in most cases so I would recommend clicking on the image. For the sake of 25p, you will find a lot more people and the actual address where they were living. Just in case anyone was thinking about paying to search this site, the details they will give you are: The house where they were living (full address exc postcode), number of rooms occupied if less than 5, full name of every person there, relation to head of household, condition as to marriage, age last birthday, profession, place of birth and disabilities. Hope this helps someone out there.
