My grandfather William Edward Dugdale lived in Colne in 1899. He was a Hatter and Hosier and is shown in a burnley directory as living/working at number 54 Market Street. Does anyone out there have any information on Colne/on Market street businesses or the trade of hatter and hosier at this time. William and his family moved from Colne to live in Liverpool and are show on birth certs as definately living there in jan of 1901. would be brilliant if anyone could help. alison

Alison - Unfotunately I am not able to help with your enquiry, but I too have a relative who owned a tripe shop on Market St. Colne prior to 1909 (surname Townson) subsequently his son owned a shoe shop on Market St. (don't know what number - may even be the same shop). If you get any response with regard to business in Colne, I would be obliged if you could pass it on to me. Many thanks Hilary

The information for a 1899 directory would have been collected and compiled for printing in 1898, this does leave time for the family to have moved away in the time between the issue of the directory and the taking of the 1901 census or registering of births in 1901
