Hello everyone ,I have only just started this and am stuck already. I have found two of my g/parents on the 1901 cenus but cannot find the other 2. I have date of death and ages for them all but which way next??? Sorry if I seem thick but I have had an information overload this week. |

Brenda, There are quite a few sites you can try. Have you tried the Latterday Saints? or freeBMD, I would say they were your first options, if you're stuck after that put another msg on the tips board and I am sure we will all get together to help you out. Good Luck Kim Sandhurst Berks |

Something else that should be said is that the 1901 census is RIDDLED with transcription errors - so try using wildcards in the names and be a bit creative in how the name might have appeared - for example one of the names I was researching was BUTLER and it appeared as BUTTER - also COULBY appeared as GAULBY. Your missing grandparents are more than likely on the 1901 census, you just have to be persistent when the first try fails. Graham |

Hi Brenda I had the same problem with my great grandfather on the 1881 census. In the end I got his birth certificate as I knew his age from the 1901 census, and used that to find him on 1837 online, got the reference, got the certificate! Once I had that information I searched on the 1881 census for his parents, and found him that way. He had been entered without a place of birth or Administrative county, so every search I tried had pulled up zero!It just listed his name and age and nothing else! The moral of this lengthy tale(!) is that sometimes it helps if you look for the person you are after through the back door , so to speak, try finding one of their relatives, e.g. wife, mother etc.. and see if that leads you to them. I didn't find my 2 grandads until I paid to view the census details. One had been transcribed as 38, on the original form it was 8 crossed out and replaced by 3 (which was his age). I found the other one, eventually, by finding the marriage of his mother. She had been a single parent, then got married! Keep trying, I am sure that you will find them eventually! Hello all,I wanted to let the people who have replied to my question know that I have now found all my gparents on the 1901 cenus.Bit of a job with maternal gf he appears to have been known by his gm name.With my Paternal gm had to use wildcards,but listing was there anyway,I feel like I've won the lottery.Many thanks once again. brenda |
