On my grandfathers birth cert it gives his father as Thomas Arthur Horsehair Pritchard and his mother as Louisa formerly Marlow. I have found Thomas Pritchard (age39) and Louisa (age 28)on the 1901 census which gives his birth place as Newington. I have got the birth cert for Thomas Arthur Pritchard born Newington 1862, and his fathers name is Rowland (my grandfather/ his son was Roland) so it could be right. But no mention of Horsehair!! Would someone just take on this name? Why horsehair? Is it some strange Victorian ritual that I don't know about? Or have I got the wrong Thomas Pritchard birth cert? I also cannot find any record of Thomas and Louisa's marriage. Advice please, please, please Chris

Chris, sounds like your great grandfather was a bit of a joker and added Horsehair as a name.

Horsehair was used in upholdery/furnishing,in Victorian times. Do you know what he worked as? Could this be some sort of occupation based nickname, like they tend to have in Wales eg Jones the Post?

His occupation was given as builders labourer on the 1901 cencus and builders labourer on one sons birth cert. and general labourer on another sons birth cert. In 1881 (if its the right one) his occupation is mechanic. So i dont think upholsterer fits. But thanks anyway. Chris

Thanks Only thing is his wifes maiden name was Marlow. Do you think she was Horsehair Marlow? But then why take the Horsehair and not the Marlow. I suppose it would help if could find a record of their marriage!! Unfortunately no where to be found!! But thanks to you all for responding. Chris

What about his maternal or paternal grandmothers' maiden names?

If the Birth Cert for Thomas Pritchard is the right one then his mothers maiden name was May, apart from that I have not got that far back. But its worth bearing in mind. Thanks
