Just a thought, my inlaws live 20 miles north of Carisle, and they are in Scotland, is there any chance his birth was registered in Scotland not England (you can search the Scotish Origins site for both registrations from 1855 and old parish records if the IGI hasnt come up with anything useful, and have you tried a parent search on IGI, which may bring up siblings if not the actual person.

Hi Sharron Sometimes you just need a big piece of luck! I have not been able to find my ggrandfathers birth. I looked on the friends reunited site and found someone who was at school about the same time that I was, in the town where my ggrandfather appears in the 1901 census. Fortunately its not a very commom name and believe it or not a reply came back saying we have the same ggrandfather. Another stroke of luck was that he had already traced our family and will send me the family tree. It seems more people than you think are into tracing their families. Good luck Best wishes Linda (Harrogate)

Have you tried the 1881 census as he will be 10 and should be at home with parents. It is online at www.familysearchdotorg. Also have you tried searching for Henry Richard instead, I have found missing people by swopping the names around.

OK I am having the same problem (see 15/06 mail re Riley Ferguson). I have the same info. Does his father's name appear on the marriage cert. ( mine doesn't) then you may be able to trace him through his father. Any Bro's or sisters. Try them. Otherwise it's keep trying. Sorry. If I find a way round it I will let you know.

I too have had the same problem locating my Ggrandfather William Baker (common name). The Gro charge £11.50 for a 3 year either way search. They are refunding £7 as they could not trace him with the father (Stephen) I gave.I know that he was born 1860/61 in St Paul's Bristol from 1901 census, but there is no trace of him on 1881 Census. Its a bit like knocking on doors all the time when nobody answers and you know they're in! Marion, Bristol.

hi Sharron I'm no expert, but I think the Pro do a search facility for around £20, I'm sure there are more knowledgable people out there that will put you straight. I think they may be able to find his birth cert if you give them the information that you have, i.e where he was born , possible date range, full name etc... Regards Maxine

hi Jim. Well I,ve been up to Carlisle to look at records (I live in York). I've been on all the web sites and even been to the libiray in York which also hold BDM. I was thinking that maybe he was fostered or something and I just don't know where to start looking. sharron

Hi Sharron, You didn't tell us what else you have looked at to find Greatgdad. For example have you tried the Public Records Office at Kew? Jim

My G.Grandfather was born around 1871 according to the 1901 cencors. He was born in Black Dyke Cumberland (Parish Holme Cultram). In the censors he was visiting a lady in Great Easby (Brampton) who was called Hannah Studholme and was also born in Black Dyke (My G.Grandfather is called Richard Henry Gordon) Although I have his marriage and Death for the live of me I can't find his birth. I have looked under the Parish of Holme Cultram and found Hannahs birth, but not my G.Grandfather. I beleive the woman he was visiting in 1901 was or maybe his mother. So how would I go about finding this out. PLEASE help as this is driving me mad....... sharron
