Janet Try this A place-name index which relates each place-name to its County and Registration District ( http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/civreg/places). Yvonne I looked for Wallingford on this site and it gave me Berkshire. Is that right? Vera, Manchester, LAN

The Oxfordshire/Berkshire boundaries are very convoluted. I do know that Wallingford is not far from Oxford as I had a fun weekend there in 1968 with a hardboard punt. Jim, Gosport. HAM

have you tried going on www.old-maps.co.uk? I have found it really helpful when trying to locate which county places used to be in. Kim Sandhurst Berks

You can search place names in England at http://www.gazetteer.co.uk/ There is a similar site for Welsh places (it is actually much more comprehensive as it has street names). http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ can sometimes be messy when trying to search for a place. I usually find a modern address in the same area (using a WWW search - there is almost certainly going to be a reference to the place) then enter the postcode into old-maps. Martin Briscoe
